This tin litho tambourine produced by Chein during the 1930s is in exceptional condition. I see no dimpling to the front, which is quite unusual. This should bring top dollar!

Rare 1920's Chein Tin Lithographed Halloween Tambourine Black Cats Witch JOL
The seller states that this tin litho tambourine “needs” a new home. One way to hasten the finding of a new abode is to offer it at a reasonable price. It is being offered at $500 with an invitation to make an offer, a sure tip-off that a seller knows the asking price is ridiculous. I’d say a reasonable offer given the softness of the market segment is in the $250-275 range.

This tin litho tambourine wasn’t made by T. Cohn. It has been plainly marked on its face by the maker - Chein. It looks to be in fine condition, but the asking price of $300 is too high. A reasonable BIN offer would be ~ $175.
Vintage Halloween Tamborine, J. Chein & Co, USA, 1940's, Noisemaker
This actually looks to be in stellar condition. Naturally, these tin litho tambourines were designed to be banged around, so it is difficult to find one in near-perfect condition. The photos convey that this still possesses bright colors and has a minimum of wear. Even the BIN is reasonable. Although one of the jangles is missing, this isn't a big deal as virtually all Chein jangles are interchangeable. This was made in the 1930s.

Tin has been a market laggard over the last several years, so this result is an anomaly. Sustainable guide value is $225 for one in this general condition.

Here is a portion of the caption for this tambourine on page 215, "The goose's eye is either smaller or missing on those tambourines made later. So, the clearer or more prominent the eye, the earlier the tambourine was made."Chein produced this design in the 1920s, so this particular one was made in the last year or so of production.

I haven't seen this tambourine in this condition in many years. From the photos it appears that the litho is near flawless and the coloring is deep and rich. I expect this to go high.
