This 1920s German nodder would have originally been sold with a green feather that protruded from his head.

Vintage 1925 large Halloween Decoration with Witch stirring Honeycomb Cauldron
You seldom see this iteration with the orange honeycomb cauldron. Frankly, I like it much more than I do the typical black ones you see. Another plus is that this doesn't have any repair to the arch, a common point of failure with this design. This is the largest of the three sizes Beistle produced.
09/16 Update: I am not at all surprised it brought a very strong price of $482!
Beistle's Jointed Horrible Halloween Witch & Envelope
The star of this lot is the envelope. Even though the condition is described as poor, it is the earliest iteration of it I've seen to date. The one on page 147 was probably the second season's version as it is less busy and more refined. (I don't mean that is necessarily a good thing as I love the wordiness and vitality of this earlier version.)
Halloween Crescent Moon With Flying Witch
This is probably the best design of a set of very-tough-to-find diecuts Beistle issued in the mid-1950s when their creative juices were at very low tide. This set has an unusual feature of silhouettes separately attached to the main diecut. As I write in my newly published third edition on page 158, "More labor is required and the chance for defects increases the risk of returns. This may account for the mere three season run this diecut enjoyed."
09/16 Update: This sold for an unbelievable and completely unsustainable price of $538. The seller got top, top dollar the likes of which for this diecut probably will not be seen again.
Vintage 30 Inch Halloween Red Devil Fully Jointed & Poseable Beistle USA Die Cut
Beistle issued this "Jointed Lightning Wumpus - The Hallowe'en Devil" in 1931. The seller should invest in a better camera and spend a bit more time describing the condition as it isn't clear whether the reinforcements to the legs are to cover actual breaks or merely to make an otherwise item simply more sturdy.
Vintage HALLOWEEN Place Card Witch JOL Goblin 1930s First I've Seen !
This interesting item was manufactured by Hallmark in the later 1920s. There were ~4 different designs against a black bottom and these comprise a full set.
Thanks Tom and Linda!
I had the occasion to call a married couple of collectors in Ohio two days ago and chat about Halloween. What fun it was! I learned about the existence of another non-mechanical Rosen Pops box and some rare Dennison store display signs. We had fun speaking about the state of our hobby today and some of the reasons underlying the surge in prices we are seeing this season on many items. I don't know of another hobby where there are so many collectors so passionate about the nuances of items produced during "The Golden Age." In any event, the chat with such erudite and enthusiastic collectors made my day. Thanks Tom and Linda!
Vintage Halloween Dennison Pop Up Witch Tally card
Here is another anecdotal example of the 2014 surge in prices for pre-1935 Beistle, Dennison and Gibson items. This mechanical tally made by Dennison beginning in 1928 typically trades for ~$65. This surge is definitely a recent phenomenon. An identical tally was offered on Ebay several months ago with an opening bid of ~$45 and it failed to garner a single bid.
Vintage Round Crank Metal Halloween Noisemaker~Flying Witch Paper Face Cover
This is not a vintage item. It appears to me that someone made a color copy of the graphics on a well-known tambourine (probably made by Kirchhof), shrunk them, distressed the paper to make it appear old and glued it on to a non-Halloween ratchet with a plastic handle. The presence of a plastic handle indicates the ratchet was produced in the 1960s. The tambourine from which the image was copied was made in the 1930s. It's too bad that this sold for $35 when it has decorative value - at best.
Vintage Halloween Tales book by Ethel Owen 1928 Hallowe'en Tales
Prices for this particular book have escalated dramatically in the past year. The interior is pedestrian so the allure must be the awesome cover illustrations and detailed endpapers. One in much better condition sold last year in the neighborhood of $450.
"VINTAGE HALLOWEEN JOL1908-1932~GERMANY~CHILD'S JACK-O-LANTERN PORCELAIN TEA SET
I'm surprised this listing lasted as long as it did -and even then it was only a handful of hours. I was preparing to comment that someone should snap this up asap when the listing changed mid-post to indicate that someone had bought it. Kudos! This medium-sized tea cup is a just a tad harder to find than the smallest size, even though both are assigned a Relative Scarcity Index number of "3." The guide price, though, illustrates that difference. If you want to see the finest array of pieces from the various sized tea sets the Germans made early in the last century shown in any reference, pick up a copy of my newly revised and greatly enhanced third edition of Vintage Halloween Collectibles.
Halloween Cardboard Witch And Black Cat Candy Container
This 1950s cardboard candy holder was made by Alberts Display and Novelty Company of New York. As I write on page 58, "This is made from heavy cardboard. Although having the chimney as the repository for candy is a pretty cool concept, the remaining graphics are decidedly ho-hum. These surface fairly regularly and typically trade for ~$50 in perfect condition.
vintage Halloween set of 8 Black musical cats
Whomever the buyer was got a fantastic bargain on this BIN offering of a complete set of the H.E. Luhrs' black cat band. (Why am I never on the site when such things surface?) :)
"VINTAGE HALLOWEEN 1923 HALLOWE'EN PARTY SET~BEISTLE~DECORATIONS FOR FOUR"
This long-produced and well-designed party set was offered by Beistle in 1923 in three iterations: a booklet with either orange or white pages, an enveloped set and a boxed set. The booklet is the most common but seldom surfaces in this condition. This nearly perfect item is being offered right at guide value. Snap it up from this awesome seller!
"VINTAGE HALLOWEEN~ EARLY 4-SECTION FENCE~2 WITCHES, 2 WRAITHS~WHITNEY~1930'S"
I only have seen this compelling fence centerpiece made by Whitney in the 1930s a handful of times since beginning collecting in 1988. Whitney sometimes produced the strangest imagery. Who would have thought of incorporating imagery of snakes escaping being boiled alive in a cauldron? This top-notch seller got top price for this fence.
