Lot 97 Rare ~1900 Three-Dimensional Dresden Black Cat Ornament
This exceedingly rare black cat “three-dimensional” Dresden ornament was produced in or around Dresden, Germany, in about 1900. The information below is quoted from an excellent article in the Christmas 2021 issue of Early American Life. “These kinds of items were made in that region from about 1870 until the onset of WWI. Dresdens come in three forms: flat, double and three-dimensional. Flats had a simple image printed on one side and paint on the undecorated back. Doubles had reverse images front and back with up to a half-inch in depth, with the halves glued together. Three-dimensionals had depths generally far exceeding a half-inch. Cottage workers, often entire families, would take the individual pieces home to assemble and decorate.” This black cat Dresden ornament measures ~4” high by ~2.5” across by ~1” deep. Like with so many Dresdens, one side is more glossy whereas the other side is more matte.
