Lot 72 1930s Gibson Shade – All Panels Different (BOOK ITEM)
Gibson produced this rare shade during the early 1930s. One gets the sense that the artist had fun designing this. Each of the four panels, including the bottom rectangles, is different. The vague Western motif, the lone candle in the glass lantern on two panels and the bats that even migrate to the shade’s top are all very pleasing. The lantern measures ~4.25” high. Each panel measures ~4.5” high by ~4.5” across. There are several minor condition issues: two bottom corners have come apart; there is a .25” closed tear at the shade’s top and two panels have small areas of soiling. I haven’t seen a similar shade in decades. This is the very item photographed for my reference book, appearing on page 44 of the third edition. This entered the collection on April 30, 2001. The buyer will receive a handwritten note on my personal Halloween stationery attesting to this provenance.
