Lot 66                1950s Canadian Cat with Monocle Diecut (BOOK ITEM)
This diecut, not to be confused with the very common design produced by Beistle, was made by Make-Believe Playsuits of Canada during the 1950s. It is a slightly more sinister take on the common Beistle version as the cat looks like a dandy vampire. The diecut measures ~8.5” high by ~6.5” wide. It is apparent that this diecut has seen many seasons. It has several hard creases, most notably at the point where the derby’s brim extends beyond the face. There is edge wear present as well as some surface paper loss at the top of the derby hat. That said, I have only seen this Canadian version exactly once in my nearly 30 years of collecting. This is the very item photographed for my reference books and appearing on page 166 of the third edition. This entered the collection on August 3, 1998. The prevailing bidder will receive a handwritten note on my personal Halloween stationary attesting to this provenance.
